17/12/2006 - The World Can't Wait - Make Poverty History! Mass Rally Planned in London on 2nd June 2007
Two years ago, world leaders were given a
huge global mandate to Make Poverty History. Unprecedented public pressure
led them to make some big promises – to increase aid, cancel many poor
countries’ debts, and to ensure Universal Access to HIV Treatment by 2010.
But they haven’t done nearly enough. As the clock ticks, peoples’ lives are
lost. On June 2nd anti-poverty campaigners from around the UK will gather
for a mass rally in London to give the Prime Minister a good send-off as he
heads for Germany for the G8 Summit.
International Service is teaming up with VSO, SPW and Skillshare
International so that the voices of international volunteers and our
supporters are heard in the call to end poverty. Join us in Geraldine Mary
Harmsworth Park from 11am. There will be instrument and noise-making
workshops during the morning, as well as a chill out area for people to
gather, find out more about volunteering and other ways to get involved with
our organizations. Bring a blanket and picnic and catch up with fellow
ex-volunteers. We will start making our way down to the river together at
1pm for the Big Noise event at 2.30pm. We want to have as many voices as
possible so please collect the names of people you know who’d like to have
their voice heard but can’t make it on the day. We will be collecting in all
names at our stall and these will be added to the grand total of Voices
Against Poverty!
We also need volunteers to help us run everything smoothly. If you have an
hour that you could spare to help facilitate the workshops or help out on
the information stalls please contact
lredgate@internationalservice.org.uk. We’d very much appreciate your
support! A full briefing will be given to volunteers in the morning and the
time commitment is as much or as little as you wish to spare.
