International Service is a UK registered charity and the oldest of the British volunteer sending agencies. It was founded in 1953 as the United Nations Association (UNA) Trust’s response to the Dutch floods of that year but soon after started to expand its reach outside Europe.

Though still maintaining links with the UNA, IS became an independent charitable company in 1998.

How we work

IS works to promote long-term development in poor communities in the Third World by working in partnership with local organisations, non-governmental or governmental organisations or the two in collaboration.

Acting in response to local requests for skills that are not available in the region, IS provides Development Workers, who share their skills and experiences with the local people to strengthen their efforts to improve their situation.

IS Development Workers work directly with individual, groups and communities, but in all our partnerships it is important for us to build capacity through increasing organisational awareness and consciousness so that the organisation is better able to take control of its own functions and future in a responsible manner.
More about programmes and field work
More about jobs

In the UK, IS works to promote the concept of Global Citizenship (defined as "Having a sense of your role in the world and being willing to take action to bring about change towards the goal of the eradication of poverty").

Through campaigns, educational materials and other initiatives based on information and experiences from the field, we aim to promote understanding and increase awareness of development issues.

We work actively to increase links between our southern partners and northern civil society groups in the North and to develop new partnerships in the North with eg. Academic institutions and professional groups.
