International Service works with grassroots organisations in West Africa, Latin America and the Middle East, helping to strengthen them in their efforts to build sustainable communities. Reporting to the Chief Executive, your role will be to support, manage and develop IS's international work. You will manage Field Directors and programme staff in the UK, oversee the strategic development of IS's programmes, lead the development of organisational tools and systems for knowledge management and learning, contribute to the diversification of IS's funding base, and represent IS in networks and meetings within the UK development sector. This is a key management role, requiring an in-depth understanding of development programme design, implementation and evaluation, significant programme management experience, solid financial management skills, and demonstrable capacities in managing, motivating and supporting staff, including in complex and challenging situations. You will need highly-developed cross-cultural communication skills (fluent English, and working knowledge of one or more of French/Spanish/Portuguese/Arabic desirable), an understanding of/commitment to IS's mission and values, and a participatory and collaborative approach. You will be expected to travel for 6-8 weeks per year, including remote areas.

Disability Awareness Trainer
SNAP (Servicio Nacional de Administración de Personal), La Paz, Bolivia

SNAP is a Bolivian public administrative body, whose responsibilities include the training and development of public servants. Based in La Paz with 35 staff, it has 15 regional training centres, covering rural and urban areas across Bolivia's nine administrative regions. Bolivian law requires that 4% of the staff of public entities should be disabled, but provision for disabled employees in the public sector remains very limited, and the situation faced by disabled people generally is one of exclusion, discrimination, and ignorance. Your role will be to support SNAP's training and development unit in its efforts to address some of these issues. You will contribute to the development of a professional inclusion strategy, including designing and facilitating awareness raising workshops, developing appropriate materials, coordinating with media representatives to increase coverage of disability issues and the work of SNAP, as well as networking with other actors in the disability field. This post forms part of a programme called Towards the Social Inclusion of Disabled People into Local and National Development Processes which is financed by Irish Aid.

Activities include three projects: A Roda Do Sol (the sun circle): residential accommodation for children and adolescents who are living with HIV or are the victims of domestic violence; Rede Participava (participative network): workshops in basic literacy, music, theatre, art; and the Apôitchecos puppet theatre. Your role will be to strengthen Apôitchá's communications strategies and develop its inistitutional image, so that it can better demonstrate the effectiveness of art and education in the fight for children and adolescents' rights. Based in Gaoua, a small town in the south-west of Burkina Faso, your role will be to strengthen the organisational capacities of COPAPH/Poni, a provincial network of disabled people's organisations, focusing particularly on activities around inclusive education - setting up a training programme and providing training and technical support to DPOs, children's parents, teachers and children to assist integration of children in inclusive classrooms. You will also help strengthen the organisational capacities of COPAPH/Poni and its member organisations through improving project management and fundraising. It has executed a range of programmes over the last 5-10 years related to food security, environmental protection and reproductive health, as well as promoting women's rights and the inclusion of women in decision-making processes at a local level. In an area characterised by rock, poor soil and very low rainfall (only 12% of land can be cultivated), child malnutrition is a major problem; your role will be to support YAGTU in the thematic area of nutrition (for which it has recently received new funding) as well as helping to develop its organisational capacity (including reviewing structures and systems, providing training and tools in fundraising and project management, and engaging board members). You should have qualifications related to public health/child nutrition (preferably to masters level), together with at least 3 years' experience in project management and in working at a grassroots level, ideally in a rural African context. A significant amount of your time will be spent in the field, and you should be highly flexible, adaptable and culturally sensitive. Based within WCLAC's Research & Documentation Unit, your role will be to support its newly established Palestinian Women's Human Rights Programme (PWHRP). You will help build capacities in advanced legal research on international laws and conventions applying to human rights violations of women and girls, resulting both from the Israeli occupation and internal gender-based inequalities, assist in its reporting to CEDAW (Convention on the Elimination of all forms of Discrimination Against Women), and coordinate all networking activities. Educated to postgraduate level, with a sound knowledge of international human rights law, UN mechanisms and instruments, and at least two years' action-research experience related to human rights, you will develop the theoretical and conceptual frameworks related to the international aspect of the PWHRP, as well as providing appropriate training to staff and community fieldworkers in international human rights law. Conditions of Service

All posts require candidates with relevant qualifications and at least two years’ appropriate experience, preferably in a development context. Unless otherwise stated, appointment is for a minimum of two years, under the following conditions: monthly living allowance, resettlement grant according to length of service, medical costs, personal insurance and medical evacuation cover, travel costs, training costs, 20 days’ annual leave. IS welcomes applications from non-UK nationals, but is unable to consider applications from nationals of the country in which the project is located.

Limited costs (flights/insurance/accommodation) may be covered for accompanying partners (further details available on request). Selection for all posts takes place over two days at our offices in York, for which accommodation is provided and travel expenses reimbursed to a maximum of £350.
