A new movement is born
On Saturday 28 March 2009, 35,000 people marched through London calling on global leaders to secure an economy that delivers decent jobs and public services for all, an end to global poverty and inequality, and a green economy.
The rally in Hyde Park saw calls for international action to deliver tax and trade justice, a Green New Deal in both rich and poor countries, and most importantly, democratic accountability of governments, banks and international financial institutions.
Members of '
Put People First' - an unprecedented alliance of more than 150 unions, development, faith and environment groups, including International Service - are united in calling on the G20 leaders to recognise that only just, fair and sustainable policies can lead the world out of recession. A return to 'business as usual' - with the associated poverty, inequality and climate change - is not an option.

JessHurd/Put People FirstThe day's march is not the end of the campaign - it's the start.
The UK is chair of the
G20 for the rest of 2009, during which the G8, the G20, and the United Nations all meet to chart a way through the recession. 2009 will end with a
climate conference in Copenhagen.
These are real opportunities to win substantial change for poor people and the environment - Put People First will use them to advance the call for an economy that works for secure jobs, global justice and a safe climate.
We'll be watching the outcomes of the G20 closely. There may be positive words today, but will they be turned into positive action tomorrow?
