International Service is a UK registered charity and the oldest of the British volunteer sending agencies. It was founded in 1953 as the United Nations Association (UNA) Trust's response to the Dutch floods of that year but soon after started to expand its reach outside Europe. Though still maintaining links with the UNA, IS became an independent charitable company in 1998.

How we work

IS works to promote long-term development in poor communities in the Third World by working in partnership with local organisations, non-governmental or governmental organisations or the two in collaboration.

Acting in response to local requests for skills that are not available in the region, IS provides Development Workers, who share their skills and experiences with the local people to strengthen their efforts to improve their situation.
