Firm Foundation - Rwanda

Firm Foundation Rwanda is a women’s economic empowerment project taking place in Kicukiro , a district in Rwanda.

In this project International Service are working with YWCA Rwanda to provide personal initiative coaching for low-income entrepreneurs in Kicukiro. These are young women who are among the least well-off in Rwandan society but have set up and are running businesses to lift themselves and their families out of poverty.

The project has achieved:

  • Training 3 community coaches and 4 YWCA staff members in personal initiative coaching

  • Providing 4 monthly coaching or mentoring sessions for over 50 entrepreneurs.

This is a comparative pilot comparing what happens with similar groups of young women if they take part in coaching, mentoring, or the basic support YWCA offers.

By enabling women to start and run their own businesses, we aim to reduce extreme poverty by 20% in the areas where Firm Foundation takes place, creating a ripple effect in the surrounding communities as our trained coaches take their expertise further afield.

This project is kindly supported by North Star Coffee from Leeds, who are donating £1 for every bag sold of their Rwanda Twumba Coffee to this project. You can buy this delicious coffee online or cafés they supply around the UK.
